<span style="color: purple; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The snow this winter has been great. We have been able to feed most of this winter with the bobsled. Jared and the kids have lots of fun with the teams. Sometimes Jared is unable to feed and the kids have to do it all. The boys are old enough that they can catch, harness and feed all by themselves. If you look close at the pictures you can tell that they also like to have fun while they do it, they each take turns riding in the sled behind the wagon, they get to do a little sledding while feeding, "kill two birds with one stone". Why Not??
We got the opportunity to do a horse sale for Newell Moss last month, in Salina, Utah. He had a great turn out and some really nice looking and well bred horses for sale. This was Newell's first herd sale and he was selling some Champion Reining, Cutting and Working Cowhorse bloodline mares, bred mares, weanlings, yearlings and stallions. Newell has been an AQHA production breeder for 30+ years. We were privileged to be part of this sale and to be able to associate with many AQHA breeders/producers like Newell. Thank you Newell, for letting us serve you. Here are a few pictures of the big day.

The grass is growing, winter clean up has begun, fencing projects are in full force and most importantly of all, BABIES are arriving. First we had baby lambs (which Lane & Jared don't count as part of LRR, just Amy's project), then calves and now baby foals. They are all so cute and the ranch is full of excitement. We are still calving a few heifers and about 8 more horses, but we are pretty close to the end.

The weather has been great for calving but as always with first time heifers, you have to watch them like a hawk. Although they are nice calves the birth weights are a little on the larger side and we are having to assist a lot of the heifers. Lane and Jared are taking turns on the night shift and everyone is on call during the days. Last Monday the kids were out of school and Shadie long with grandpa and Jared got to help run in a few pairs and a heifer that was in labor and needed some help. Her horse Brownie was a little fresh from the winter months but she did just fine. The family all got to watch this calf be pulled and Ty is becoming quite the little vet. He really enjoys this process and loves to help. Ty took the night watch with Grandpa one night last week and likes learning what to look for. One time when me and Waylon were out making the rounds, even Waylon understood what to look for when the heifers where getting close. We love our lifestyle and that we get to work so close with our family.

When we got them home we went right to Freeze branding them and getting them turned out on the bird refuge. It has been such a mild winter for us here in Utah, which is good and bad, but we hope spring comes when it is supposed to. As usual the whole family helped out. The kids where still on Christmas brake and they where happy to be able to work the new cattle when they got here. Overall very excited about the new additions to our cow/calf herd.
We are excited about this load of 1/2 Irish Black calves, they look really good. Lane, Jared and the boys went and gathered, sorted and had them shipped by noon on Tuesday. It went really smooth and all the cattle fit well on this load for the program. The weather was pretty chilly. We had to chain up coming over Donner but once we got to Auburn, it was pretty dry. This sale we had 75+ horses and really overall, we had a good sale. "Good horses brought good money". We only had a few go out from our ranch, but what we did take, sold well and they all have new homes. Virgil is pictured with a chestnut gelding named Gus, V worked with this young horse a lot and really hated to sell him, but he needs a little better rope horse for the competitions. The kids also have been working on this one little pony named Pepper, she also had a filly on her side, Brownie. They sold the pair at Auburn and it was quite the show. Virgil, Waylon and Shadie spent more time with this pony then they did at home. Pepper & Brownie were a big hit, along with many of the other consigned horses in the sale. Her are just a few pictures of the day. Thanks to all the consignors and buyers that help make our sale a success.

It was a great day and the weather was perfect. The cattle looked good and every ones horses performed well. We were able to do it before school started so the kids were able to go up and help, even Shadie roped a few. This year we are Freeze Branding our cattle, hoping it will help keep the Cattle Rustlers at bay, to have a more prominent brand might help!! Here are some pictures of the day!!
It ran Wend-Saturday and we had a blast getting to know their families, spending time getting help on our ranches and with our cattle, and just being together. We have so much fun together and are just really close. We were so sorry that Chet and Tara were unable to attend, Chet had back problems the day before they were to leave and felt he could not make the trip. We missed you and are excited to see you in November. We meet as a group 3 times a year to give advice about each of our ranches, and we look forward to that time we get to spend with these great people. Here are just a few highlights of the weekend.
~Our youngest girl had to have stitches the last night, she took a header and hit a rock. Good thing Aunt Sarah is a Nurse Practictioner and had the skills to fix her right up. She does this quite often for us, we swap her eggs and things like that. haha Thanks Aunt Sarah. We really appreciate it.
~Overall the weekend went wonderful and we had a great time and we really learned a lot about our own ranch. Thanks to RMC and the EL Program for bring us together, to learn, become successful and to build friendships.

We have started calving, turned out the commercial herd and have run full head into the many "Fires" that need to be attended to during the summer months, here at the ranch. Finally summer decided to show up and the grass is growing nicely and our gardens are planted and also are started up well. Animals look good, the auctions is going well and calving season has started off great. Lane and Jared have been traveling a lot lately, promoting the Irish Black Cattle and are excited about the interest that is shown in the breed. On a couple of weekends Jared & Amy's family were able to go and check on the yearlings and the cow/calf herd. The grass looks good and so do the cattle, they are really enjoying the sunshine as are we. Our web page is now up and running, so please check it out. http://www.loganriverranch.com/.
This business is the Horse/Bull/Consignment/Etc. Sales, part of the Parker's lives. We love putting on horse sales and hire on to do many Dispersal and Production Sales around the Intermountain Region. Our favorite sale is one that grandpa Dean started 49 years ago in Auburn California. We still put on a Spring and Fall sale there every year. This Springs sale, considering everything, went very well. We sold about 60 head of horses, this is an all breed, all age horse sale, but most of the horses were using horses. Jared always has a few horses to sale, due to all the dude horses that he leases, so this Spring Ty, Virgil and Waylon (Jared & Amy's boys) came out to ride the horses through the ring for him. They did such a good job on all the horses, but all three of them rode a big, black Percheron gelding through for Jared and each of them showed there stuff with Big Bart. Bart sold well along with many other great horses at the Auburn All Western. Here's a video of the boys working hard.
We turned out most of our cattle this past week. It has been really nice, not feeding any more hay to the cattle. We are still being blessed with plenty of moisture but are receiving some SUN! It is supposed to be sunny for the next 5 days and we welcome it.
Here is a picture of the cattle coming out of the underpass. You can't tell it with this picture but the cattle had to swim through about 2 feet of water. By using the low stress handling techniques, the cattle just walked right on through it and down into the next pasture. It was quiet, quick and only took just a few miniutes to move the cattle down the road a mile into the new pasture. The Parker Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11215922146944480826noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-957676212714089449.post-17488172138288295852011-04-25T13:08:00.000-07:002011-04-25T13:12:58.132-07:00THIS IS WHAT LOGAN RIVER RANCH IS DOING!!
We are very excited, our 1st placement of 1/2 Irish Black, Pasture Raised Yearlings will finish May 1st. We are in a program, Country Natural Beef (CNB) where we retain ownership of our cattle until they are slaughtered. The past few years have been successful and quite a learning experience. We are especially excited because this is the first set if 1/2 Irish Black Cattle that we have had in the feed lot. Our carcass evaluations in the past have been good, but we are anxiously awaiting the carcass results on our 1/2 Irish Black, Pasture Raised Cattle. We will post results on the carcass data as soon as we receive them.

CheckingThe past few days we have been busy finishing up the freeze branding on the Irish Black Cattle. While we were running them through the chute we decided to go ahead a draw blood for the pregnancy test. Lane is really getting the hang of drawing the blood, and it saves us the expense of having the vet come down and do it for us. Tuesday, is the girls day off of work and the kids also were out of school that day, so everyone got to help. It sure makes it nice when we don't have to pay any outside hands to work the cattle (which is most of the time).
It snowed for 3 days straight and then finally on Saturday night, we had a birthday dinner for Susan and when she blew the candle out on her cake, she wished it would stop snowing, we all looked out the window and WOW it had stopped and there was some sunshine braking through the clouds. So thank you Susan. The moisture really is a blessing, but we were taking advantage of and getting used to the spring weather. I think the cattle really enjoyed the break from the snow as much as we did.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Maurice Boney is worried about the beef business. He says the U.S. cow herd is too diverse, comprised of too many breeds and too many gene-trait combinations, to ever produce consistently high-quality products for consumers.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So he's spent much of his life trying to do something about it. Boney, who ranches near Johnstown, Colo., has been developing a line bred breed of cattle called Irish Blacks and Irish Reds for nearly 40 years. The breed, trademarked by Boney and marketed under an exclusive contractual agreement to a select but growing group of producers in 22 states, is gaining attention from cattle feeders, packers and restaurateurs as an answer to many of the industry's most pressing concerns. Derived primarily from Friesian genetics and a small amount of Black Angus genetics (35 years ago) from the old “Revolution” line, the breed has been close-herd line-bred for built-in genetic predictability to transmit quality genetics for fertility, production attributes and superior beef quality.

“The genetic make-up of a large portion of today's beef herds is highly heterozygous,” explains Boney. “Because most cattle in the U.S. cow herd are heterozygous – instead of homozygous — for important production and carcass traits, they've lost their ability to transmit desirable genetics for carcass quality and fertility to their offspring.” The result of all this heterozygosity, explains Boney, is genetic instability, inconsistency and diminishing beef quality.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“The extremely broad and ever-expanding gene pools of today's cow herds will only ensure beef's quality continues to decline,” he says. “That's why we have concentrated on producing a highly concentrated, small genetic pool of cattle for correcting many of the problems the industry faces today. Less than two percent of cattle attain the Prime quality grade. The percentage of Choice-quality carcasses falls every year. Our program is built on correcting those problems by producing cattle with heightened predictability to transmit superior, proven genes to their offspring.” Boney's efforts trace back to 1971 when he began implementing a line breeding program built on the teachings of Dr. Jay Lush, a professor at Iowa State University and world-renowned geneticist.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In doing so, Boney bred a 18 heifers back to their sire. He then bred 16 more of the same heifers to a son of their sire (sister X sib matings). By breeding related animals to each other, he was able to ensure his foundation genetics were pure, free of genetic defects and diseases. During the ensuing four decades, he's stayed with the same bloodlines and the same breeding philosophy. And with each generation — layer upon layer, year after year — he's concentrated the union of genetically identical genes of his genetics for traits like fertility, marbling, muscling, and built in greater genetic predictability for all of these traits by doing so.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“Over the past 25 years, 75 percent of the people using our blood have never paid us a visit to see our herd,” Boney says. “The bulk of our new customers during this time frame have been neighbors, relatives, or friends of those that are using our blood. The demand for our genetically dominant blood normally exceeds our supply.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Testing for genetic superiority

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">To confirm the superior carcass attributes of the Irish Blacks, Boney along with his business associate, Guy Gould, who owns and operates Gould Ranch of Fort Morgan, Colo., began ultra sounding all of their bulls and heifers more than a decade ago.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">The ultrasound research has helped confirm many of the superior carcass attributes of the cattle, says Gould.

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Recently, a pen of Irish Black bulls averaged 11.5 months of age. They had 0.16 inches of back fat, 13.70-inches of rib eye with an average marbling score of 3.87. One of these bulls had 0.18 inches of back fat, a 12.75-square inch rib eye and an astounding marbling score of 7.27. This same bull had a 65-pound birth weight and an actual 205-day weaning weight of 675 pounds.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“Typically, Irish Blacks and Irish Reds score two to four scores higher in DNA gene testing for these traits than any of the other breeds have been able to achieve,” says Boney. “Most breeds would be happy with a marbling score of 3.5. Our bulls averaged 3.78.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">In another example, an Irish Black bull and his dam had the highest possible score for both marbling and tenderness on the Igenity test. Gould develops the bulls and females for sale and manages the cattle at his ranch.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Admittedly, Gould is a commercially focused producer. He grew up a commercial man, and even though he's transitioned to seed stock production in recent years, he adheres to the belief that none of the 350 Irish Black and Irish Red cattle receive special treatment or pampering.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“This is a working cow-calf operation,” Gould says. “To run our cattle this way is the best way to prove them out.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Interestingly, the two met in the early 1980s when Gould approached Boney about using Irish Black bulls on his cow herd.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Gould had tried several other breeds, but wasn't achieving the results he was looking for. With some breeds his weaning weights were good, but he gave up ground in fertility and calving ease. When he fixed calving problems and fertility, his weaning weights crashed.Surely, he thought, there's something out there that can balance these traits.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“I remember Maurice said to me: ‘These Irish Blacks will put 100 pounds on your calves at weaning, and all you'll need is two bulls to breed your 140 cows,'” recalls Gould. “It was a little hard to believe. But he didn't just say it, he guaranteed it.'”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Gould traded a tractor for one bull and bought the other. Boney promised to return his money if the bulls didn't settle all 140 cows and the calves didn't weigh 100 pounds more than the previous year's calf crop. Sure enough, the two bulls bred all the cows – and the resulting calves weaned off their mothers weighing 104 pounds more than the previous year's calf crop.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Needless to say Gould was hooked, so hooked that the two began building a business relationship that continues today.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Reasons to consider Irish Blacks and Reds

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Both Guy Gould and Maurice Boney believe there are six fundamental reasons for commercial producers to use Irish Blacks and Irish Reds: First, genetic purity. The breed has four decades of disciplined line-breeding behind it. It has had no other breeds blood introduced into its small gene pool, which has been the case in many “pure” breeds in the United States.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“It's most important to understand that a percentage bull cannot, and will not, reproduce himself,” says Boney. “Simple arithmetic bears this out: calves sired by a half blood bull only possess 25 percent of the blood that one is trying to make improvements with. Then consider one's chances when using a percentage bull whose gene pool is made up of several different breeds. The result of such matings will produce a broader more diverse gene pool with hundreds of different gene trait combinations.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Adds Boney: “The big bonus for the commercial producer in using our purebred bulls is the resulting heifer calves. These F1 heifers should be retained and then bred back to our purebred bulls. The 75 percent Irish Black feeder calves have been achieving 90 percent Choice or better quality grades, 1,300 to 1,400 pound finished weights, and dressing at 65 percent to 69 percent. Their feed conversion is 5.1 pounds of grain per pound of gain. The half bloods have been making 80 percent to 90 percent Choice, with feed conversions of 5.3 pounds of feed per pound of gain. It is a proven fact that the higher the percentage of Irish Black blood the higher the performance and carcass cut-out values will be.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Second, concentration of desirable genes. Unlike other breeds that have concentrated on expanding their genetic makeup, the Irish Black and Red breed is built on concentrating levels of “homozygosity” of genetic traits rather than the “heterozygosity” of genetic traits. By doing so, the ability of the Irish Blacks and Reds to transmit desirable genetic traits to their offspring is much greater than bulls of other breeds.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Third, fertility. “Our first experience with the cattle – when we used just two bulls to breed 140 cows – holds true today,” he says. “We see the same results in fertility – in both our bulls and females — today that we did then.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Fourth, carcass quality. Irish Blacks and Reds consistently score extremely high for desirable carcass genetics, particularly in tenderness and marbling.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Fifth, marketing flexibility. “The advantages of owning these cattle gives you so much versatility. There is nothing we've found that will do as well as these cattle will as productive females. And there is nothing that will do better on feed than these cattle. They possess superior performance and outstanding carcass quality. “I've fed a lot of these cattle,” says Gould. “Their cut-outs, yield grades and quality grades are far superior to industry averages.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Sixth, environmental flexibility. Today, breeders of Irish Blacks and Irish Reds can be found in every production environment in the United States. The breed is resistant to high-altitude sickness, and won't succumb to “brisket” disease when turned out on high-altitude rangeland. The cattle are also being successfully produced in such faraway regions as Canada, Mississippi, Florida and Texas. “I'm not aware of a climate anywhere where these cattle won't acclimate and do well,” says Gould.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“The cattle have hair enough to withstand winter, yet they slick off to handle the heat.”

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Together, Gould and Bone market about 80 bulls and 80 females to a select group of clientele in 22 states. To ensure the genetic purity of the breeding program for the future, commercial customers must sign an Trade Mark License agreement that requires them to castrate all bull calves sired by Irish Black bulls.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“Our customers appreciate the years of investment we've put into this breeding, and understand that it's in every one's best interest to ensure only the genetically purest Irish Blacks and Red – not crossbreds – get perpetuated as breeding stock.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“We have a couple of important goals that we'd like to accomplish with this breeding program, and they understand that it's in every one's best interest to ensure only the genetically purest Irish Blacks and Reds – not crossbreds – get perpetuated as seed stock,” says Gould.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“We want people to understand that there are some genetic options out there that they can use to straighten out some of the problems they've faced in using other breeds or breeding programs.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“Most of the people who see these cattle tell us that Irish Blacks and Reds are the best-kept secret in the beef industry,” he says. “That could be. The most difficult challenge that we face is simply getting people to take a look at them. Once they do, and we show them the performance and the cut-out data, they are sold. We very rarely have anyone show up who doesn't end up buying some of these cattle.” <span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">Adds Boney, who has spent most of his life building Irish Blacks and Irish Reds into pre-eminence:

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">“The demand for quality beef that is tender, well marbled and tasty far exceeds our industry's ability to supply it,” he says. “It has been proven that people will pay the added price to get a consistent source of such supply. We look forward to visiting with those who recognize the true value of genetic investment we have made in this breed, and understand what the true value of these cattle is to today's marketplace. That would not only make it more profitable for the people producing registered Irish Blacks and Irish Reds seed stock, but also for the commercial producer who deserves a more clear-cut opportunity to raise high-performing, profit-making, fool-proof cattle that excel in beef quality.”

The Parker Familyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11215922146944480826noreply@blogger.com0
